Which PHP do Fort Lauderdale residents attend?

Our partial hospitalization program (PHP) gives you full days of drug and alcohol treatment, about 6 hours a day, 5 days a week, while you sleep at home in Fort Lauderdale or in a certified sober home near the program.

It runs at our licensed facility in Pompano Beach, about 12 miles north.

Admissions verifies your insurance on the first call and can book your first PHP day for the same week.

Is PHP in Fort Lauderdale right for you?

Yes, if you need treatment every day but no longer need to live on site, or if weekly sessions have not been enough to keep you sober.

The signs that point to PHP:

  • You are stepping down from a live-in stay and are not ready for a lighter schedule
  • You need structure every weekday, but you have a safe, sober place to sleep
  • Intensive outpatient has not held, and you need more hours of treatment
  • A mental health condition needs near-daily psychiatric care alongside the addiction

If you need detox first, or home makes it hard to stay sober overnight, start with a live-in stay. Admissions tells you plainly which level fits.

How soon can you start PHP from Fort Lauderdale?

Within the same week in most cases, and the day after a live-in stay ends if you are stepping down.

Admissions runs a short intake assessment on the phone: what you have been using, whether you have been through treatment before, where you will sleep and how you will get here each day. The assessment uses the ASAM criteria to confirm PHP is the right level, then sets your start date. If you need detox first, we tell you on the call and admit you the same day whenever a bed is open.

What does a day in PHP look like?

A PHP day runs about 6 hours: a morning check-in, a main therapy group, individual therapy, specialty groups and medication review, then home by late afternoon.

Mornings open with a check-in group, then a main group on relapse prevention, coping skills or the roots of using. Through the week you see your therapist one to one, and join groups on trauma, family and co-occurring conditions. Your prescriber reviews medication during the program day, so nothing waits for a separate appointment.

Evenings are yours, at home or in sober housing, where you practise what you worked on that day. Fort Lauderdale bans alcohol on the beach, which makes an evening walk on the sand one of the safer ways to spend the hours after program. The next morning, you bring it back to your group.

Living Near PHP in Sober Housing

A certified sober home near the program cuts your commute to minutes and puts you with others in recovery.

How long is the drive to PHP from Fort Lauderdale?

Twenty to 25 minutes north on I-95, or by Tri-Rail from Fort Lauderdale station to Pompano Beach.

The drive from downtown runs past Oakland Park and Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, so if you live in either, or in Wilton Manors, it is shorter still. Five days a week adds up, so admissions plans the route with you before you start. If you live near the downtown Brightline station, note that Brightline does not stop in Pompano Beach, so Tri-Rail or the car is the daily option. If you prefer not to drive early in recovery, Tri-Rail covers the trip in a few stops.

Can you live in sober housing during PHP?

Yes. If home is not the right place yet, we arrange a certified sober home close to the program, and you live there while you attend PHP.

Florida law only lets licensed treatment providers refer you to certified recovery residences, so any sober home we place you in has met the state’s standard for safety and house rules. Living in sober housing with others in recovery, a short drive from the program, gives you the structure of a live-in stay without the cost of one. It also takes you out of a city built on the water: Fort Lauderdale has 165 miles of inland waterways, and if your drinking happened on boats and docks, a few weeks away from them helps.

When you are ready, you move home to Fort Lauderdale and carry on in intensive outpatient.

Is PHP or residential treatment better for you?

Residential fits when you need 24 hour support and distance from home. PHP fits when you need the same daily treatment but can sleep somewhere safe and sober.

The therapy load is close: full days of groups, individual therapy and medication management. The difference is where you sleep and who is around you at night. You can move from a live-in stay to PHP, then to IOP, with the same team at every step.

Our main partial hospitalization program page compares the levels in full.

Which therapies and medications does PHP include?

Cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, trauma-focused work and family sessions, with medication such as naltrexone, acamprosate or buprenorphine when your prescriber decides it fits.

PHP is where your team steadies a co-occurring condition such as depression or anxiety, because you see psychiatric staff nearly every day. Medication for cravings carries on from detox or your live-in stay. Both halves matter: MedlinePlus, the National Library of Medicine’s guide to drug use and addiction describes treatment as counseling paired with medication where it fits.

Who treats you in PHP?

A licensed therapist, a prescriber, psychiatric staff, nurses and a case manager, all on one treatment plan.

Your therapist leads your individual sessions and runs groups through the week. Your prescriber and psychiatric staff see you during the program day for medication and any mental health condition. Nurses check in on how you are doing. Your case manager takes care of the practical side: your employer, leave paperwork, sober housing and the plan for stepping down to IOP.

How long is PHP?

Your intake assessment sets the length, and your team reviews it every week.

The assessment uses the ASAM criteria to set your starting length and the point at which you step down to IOP. Each week your team checks how you are doing and moves that point earlier or later. Insurers authorize PHP by the week, and we file the paperwork to extend it when you need more time.

How much does PHP cost in Fort Lauderdale?

With insurance, your cost is your deductible and your share after it, and admissions gives you the exact figure before you start.

Insurers authorize PHP by the week at the highest outpatient level and review it more closely than lighter care. Florida Blue and other Blue Cross Blue Shield plans, Aetna, Cigna and most plans sold in Broward County cover a set number of weeks, renewed on your progress.

Admissions checks your benefits for free on the first call. Out of network, we tell you the gap in dollars. If you have no insurance, you get the self-pay rate on the same call.

Does Medicare cover PHP?

Admissions checks what Medicare covers for you and what other options fit, on the first call.

Coverage depends on your Medicare plan and the level of care you need, so the answer comes from a benefits check, not a general rule. If Medicare does not fit, admissions sets out the other ways to pay.

What happens after PHP?

You step down to intensive outpatient, then standard outpatient, with the same team, and keep a place in our alumni program.

Discharge planning runs through PHP. Before you finish, your therapist books your IOP track, day or evening, to fit your work in Fort Lauderdale, your prescriber confirms any ongoing medication, and you leave with a written relapse-prevention plan. Your alumni coordinator stays in touch after you finish, with alumni groups you can reach from Fort Lauderdale on a weeknight.
